How to Begin a Traveling Nurse Career

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

If you have been in the RN field for a while, you have probably at least considered a traveling nurse career at one point or another, even if only as a temporary option. The fact of the matter is that a travel nurse job can be very high paying and advantageous to your career because of the wealth of experience you will gain through different assignments in varied settings. This job option also provides the opportunity to travel to different parts of the country and see places you might never have gone to before. So just how does one go about getting started in this type of career? Well, it?s pretty simple if you know the proper steps.
The first step to entering a career as a travel nurse is making sure you?re qualified. You must be a degree-holding registered nurse, for starters, and you must have at least two years of experience in your nursing specialty. The more experience, education and specializations you have, the more assignments you will be able to pick up. If you are qualified, you will then need to find a reputable travel nursing agency to submit an application to.
You will need to interview with someone at the travel nursing agency and discuss your qualifications in order to find you the job offers that best suit your experience and specialization. They will probably ask you what your specialty is, what licenses and certifications you hold, how many years you have been working in your specialty, how long you have been working in the field in general and where you are interested in traveling to. You will also need to submit various documents to the agency that verify your experience and identification.
After all the paperwork has been processed, you will get your first travel nurse job assignment. The assignment may last a few weeks or even as long as a year, with housing and transportation included in the package. It?s a great way to get nursing experience while traveling the nation.
